Helium Stick is a very simple game with some powerful lessons on how groups communicate with each other and work most effectively together.
Start off by lining up in two rows, facing each other.
Give the group a Hellium Stick - a long thin rod. We have used extendable tent poles before or a thin bamboo stick.
Each person should hold their arm out and point their index finger.
Rest the Hellium stick on the group's fingers. Each person may have to adjust their finger to the right height until the stick is horizontal.
The purpose of the game is to lower the stick to the floor, but everyone's finger must be in contact with the stick at all times. If someone's finger comes off, the process must restart.
It sounds a lot easier than it is, and the group will quickly discover the stick often tends to move up rather than down! (this is because the collective force of people's finger's touching the pole).
We encourage the group to try for a few minutes then pause, discuss tactics and re-try again. This is where some learnings on team dynamics, communication and working together as a group are uncovered!
If you have a larger group, you can have multiple groups (depending on the length of the poles).
